Rehabilitation, “The action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.” – Oxford dictionary
Lately, with everything that is happening in the world, I think all of us could use some restoration and a shift back to normality in our lives. The Corona virus has taken the life of another loved one, and my good friend and his family are stricken with grief at their loss. The statistics in the news only show the number of deaths and people infected, but it doesn’t show how the virus impacts the rest of us. Many people would say that the lock downs are worse than the virus and what we thought would blow over in a few months has now been over a year; and still Covid-19 rages on. The virus has other ways of hurting us that we need to be aware of as well.
Since the first lock down the numbers for addiction, depression, and suicide have all gone up. Being forced to stay at home with nothing to do many people have turned to vices like alcohol and drugs to escape their worries and pass the time. As the lock down continued and weeks turned into months, the realization that many of us may never be called back to work really began to sink in. How will I provide for my family if I’m not allowed to go back to work, or there is no work to go back to? Not just employees, but businesses were also hit hard, and many have gone bankrupt. I personally know friends who lost their jobs, and friends who have permanently closed their business. I see it all around, empty commercial spaces where there used to be a café or small restaurant. I think about the people who worked there who are now jobless, I think about the business owner and all the time, money and effort they invested in it. I think about my own situation and wonder, am I next?
The situation is not good, and I worry about the uncertainty of the future. The effects of a prolonged lock down have left many people with addiction problems and depression. The damage has been done, but it’s time for us to adapt, and start piecing our lives back together. For the countless people who are now struggling with addiction and depression Milestone Health and Wellness can help. There is always hope and I know I’m not the only one trying to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there and keep moving forward, you are not alone.
