Talking to a friend or loved one about their struggle with addiction can be a difficult and uncomfortable subject. They can be defensive, and insist everything is fine, and they can also become angry and lash out at you. Talking about it can potentially create conflict which is why most people tend to avoid the subject. However, putting it off gives the addiction time to get worse. The sooner someone gets treatment, the better.
There is no standard method for telling someone they need to go to rehab. However, there are a few fundamentals that need to be considered. Trust is the first thing that must be present. People are more willing to listen to someone they trust. Reach out to someone the addict trusts and respects, and ask them to be the one to broach the subject of rehab. It is also important to be non-judgemental. People don’t respond well to negative criticism. Convincing an addict to go to rehab by scolding them and destroying their self-esteem creates more emotional stress which pushes them further away from recovery. Lastly, rehab must never be used as a form of punishment. Going to rehab is not meant to be like a jail sentence. Rehab is a place for healing, not for more punishment emotionally or physically. The important thing is to be supportive and understanding. Cornering a person into something they are not willing to do will only make them less open to change.
