Today is the day! For what you might wonder; for self improvement. I want to talk about the importance of living in the moment and focusing on the present. We all have things that worry us, however constantly worrying on an obsessive level can lead to anxiety and depression. It is important to understand that somethings are out of our control and it is pointless worrying about them. When you stop worrying about things that are out of your hands, you can focus on things that you actually can control. Eventually you realize the only things you can control are your thoughts and your actions. Invest in mastering self control before you attempt to control the world around you.
Let the mistakes of yesterday serve as reference points for today. Don’t worry about tomorrow because it is not yet here. Think about your life and what aspects need improving, then break it down in to small tasks you can do today. Learn how to solve problems step by step instead of in one go. You can’t become an expert musician in one day; it takes years of practice. You need to learn basic techniques before doing advanced ones. It’s the same for sobriety. It doesn’t magically happen overnight and suddenly your addiction problems are gone. It takes consistency and dedication. The best thing to do is take it one day at a time. Don’t focus too much on the long run and just focus on staying sober for today.
An entire day can feel like an eternity for addicts, and this is where living in the moment is important. Instead of sitting around and counting down the hours, occupy yourself with things that will improve your life. Ask your self, “Is there anything else I can do now?” Look around you, and I guarantee there are things that need your attention. Maybe that pile of clothes should be folded. Maybe you should finally finish reading that book. Maybe it’s time to change that light bulb that’s been dead for months. Maybe you should start growing those flowers in the garden. There are an endless number of small tasks that can be done around the house to distract you. Don’t underestimate the value of completing small tasks everyday. They my seem trivial, but you build discipline and learn not to procrastinate.
Taking action towards improving yourself and your surroundings today, guarantees that you start tomorrow one step ahead.
