We are all human, and we all make mistakes. Making mistakes and failing is one of the ways we learn. Failure is one of the best teachers if you open yourself to the lessons she has to share. Sometimes they are painful and can forever change us, but hopefully, we come out stronger, and wiser.

Many people don’t learn from their failures because pride and ego get in the way. They will lie to themselves and to others in an attempt to avoid embarrassment. However, when the mistake is addiction, your life and health are on the line, and there is no room for denial. People become caught in the vicious cycle of addiction and self-destructive behavior for various reasons. Addiction can be fueled by deep emotional trauma, or sometimes for no specific reason at all. The important thing is to recognize that it is a problem and an opportunity to learn. Don’t let addiction define who you are, and learn to forgive yourself. Some recovering addicts have feelings of inadequacy because they are constantly comparing themselves to others. Addicted or not, negatively comparing yourself to others will always diminish your self-esteem. Focus on your own journey of self-improvement and take it one day at a time.
