Delirium tremens (DTs) has a death rate of 37%, which is why it is considered a medical emergency. It is crucial to detect DTs early and administer treatment right away. Due to the risks associated with the symptoms of DTs, vital signs should be continuously monitored during treatment. Patients going through DTs are highly agitated and can become unruly in their delirious state of mind. It is recommended they be placed in a locked inpatient ward or the intensive care unit where they won’t harm themselves or others.

Treating DTs requires continuous sedation through the administration of benzodiazepines and supportive care. Intravenous fluids need to be administered to maintain proper electrolyte levels and hydration. In some cases, Anti-psychotic medications are recommended to calm the patient and prevent hallucinations.

After safely undergoing a monitored medical detox, patients should undergo alcohol rehab at an inpatient facility like Milestone Health & Wellness. Cognitive-behavioral therapy provides the coping skills needed to live a sober life and is a key part of the overall recovery program. To prevent relapse, we encourage continued guidance through support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous or to participate in our outpatient program.
