We all have vices, none of us are perfect nor can we ever be, and that’s OK. However it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t always strive to be our best. When we make mistakes they can be embarrassing and often our first reaction is to deny them, divert attention or make excuses. People will go through great lengths to cover up mistakes and pretend they are faultless rather than own up to them. People will sooner admit to being ignorant and say, “I didn’t know, I was unaware” rather than admit their faults.  We’re so concerned with what people think of us and we’re afraid if we appear less than perfect we’ll loose their confidence and respect.  This type of attitude prevents you from growing. Why do you need to change if you’re already perfect?  Mistakes are lives teachers if you open yourself to learn from them.

Admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery and a very important one. We’re already so reluctant to admit everyday honest mistakes, what more serious mistakes like addiction.  One reason some people quickly relapse after leaving rehab is because they never truly take the first step. They say what the doctors want to hear and go through the motions of rehab knowing the sooner they get it over with the sooner they can get back to their life. They never really take the first step and admit there is problem. They lie to themselves and carry on with their old habits believing they will get away without any consequences. It usually takes an extreme experience before someone really opens themselves to change. Many addicts have to hit rock bottom in their lives and relationships before truly wanting to change and accept help.

If you struggle with addiction the sooner you take the first step the sooner you can take your life back. Don’t wait till you hit rock bottom before being honest with yourself. We all want to build better lives  and there is nothing wrong with getting some help do it.
